Absenses and Tardies
We start school daily at 8:10 am. It extremely helpful to your child if you arrive ten minutes before our start time. This gives him or her the chance to unpack, turn homework in, find shoes, and greet friends before it's time to focus. Kids who arrive at this time tend to have a much easier transition from home to school in the mornings.
It is very important that you have your child at school on time. Please communicate with me if you know that you are going to be tardy on a certain day. We start our morning with reading and phonics followed by math and I may need to make adjustments to our schedule so that your child doesn't miss a lesson.
If your child is going to be absent, please let Mrs. Justis know at 348-2130. I will put together a homework packet for the day(s) he or she missed. This will be ready by the end of the day. Please help your child complete these papers within one week of the absence. If more time is needed, just let me know and we can make adjustments.

Students Being Picked up from School
If you are planning on someone having someone else pick up your child, please write me a note. I need a note for ANYONE other than mom or dad. I am extremely dedicated to keeping your children safe so I really need to know who has permission to take your child home. If there is someone who will be picking up your child on a regular basis, all you need to do is write a note with a blanket statement saying “______ has my permission to pick ____ up from school.” I will keep this in your child’s file for the year. The same goes for students who might be going home on the bus with a friend for a play date. Thank you so much for your support and understanding!

Phonics Readers
You might find that your child comes home with small, black and white printed books that we call "phonics readers." These books are read in class throughout the week. They are often goofy stories but they include many words that follow the spelling rules and concepts taught that week. If your child brings one home, please take some time to listen to him/her read the story and sign it when they are finished. They should be read to someone at least three times. When your child has collected three signatures, please have him or her return it to school. Here are a few suggestions for you to keep in mind as you read with your child:

- Take a picture walk. Before reading the story, have your child tell you the story by looking at the pictures. As they are telling you about the story, try to point out key words that match the pictures. For instance, if your child tells you that there is a dog on the page, you might say, "Can you find the word dog on the page?" Pointing these words out ahead of time shows your student that the words and pictures in a book are there to support one another.
- Encourage the pointer finger. Always remind your child to use his or her finger to follow along as they are reading. This helps with word accuracy as well as fluency.
- Don't let them read with speed.If your child tends to read as fast as he or she can, tell him or her that you can't understand the story. Speed reading doesn't make a "good" reader, steady reading does.
- Code, Code, Code. If your child gets hung up on a word, don't be afraid to have him or her get a pencil and code the word in the reader. This is a great time for him or her to revisit a spelling rule. Next, have your child cover up the word with a finger revealing only small segments to sound out. Finally, have them run their finger across the letters and blend the whole word together.
Parent Volunteers
We love having parent volunteers in our classroom! If you are planning to work in our room at all this year, please stop by the office and fill out a parent volunteer background check form. This MUST be turned in one week before you are scheduled to work in our room. Mrs. Justis will need a few days to process it. You only need to do this the first time you visit us because she will keep this on file for the entire year. After that, all you will need to do is sign in at the office, fill out a visitor name tag, and head down to our room.
If you are planning to come in on a weekly basis to help, please find alternative care for younger siblings. During your visit, we will be hard at work during this time and it is important that minimize distractions so that we can maximize our learning opportunities. There will times during holidays and special occasions that we need lots of hands to help run themed stations. Younger siblings are welcome to join us during this time if you would like to volunteer!
